AI Fraud Is on the Rise: What Credit Union Members Need to Know

AI Fraud

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the way we live and work, but unfortunately, it’s also giving scammers new tools to commit fraud. AI-powered scams are becoming more convincing, more personalized, and harder to detect AI Fraud.

As your credit union, our priority is to help you stay informed and protected. Here’s what you need to know about AI fraud, and how to safeguard yourself.

What Is AI Fraud?

AI fraud involves scammers using artificial intelligence technology to impersonate individuals, automate scams, or create highly realistic fake messages, voices, or videos.

Unlike traditional scams, AI fraud can:

  • Mimic a loved one’s voice
  • Create realistic fake videos (deepfakes)
  • Generate personalized phishing emails or texts
  • Imitate financial institutions or government agencies with convincing language

These scams often create urgency, fear, or excitement to pressure victims into acting quickly.

Common Types of AI-Driven Scams

  1. Voice Cloning Scams

Fraudsters can clone a person’s voice using just a few seconds of audio from social media or voicemail. You may receive a call that sounds exactly like your child or grandchild asking for emergency money.

  1. AI Phishing Messages

AI tools can generate highly personalized emails or text messages that appear legitimate, sometimes even referencing recent purchases or local events.

  1. Deepfake Videos

Scammers may use AI-generated video to impersonate executives, public figures, or even financial institution representatives.

  1. Chatbot Impersonation

Fraudsters use AI chat systems to pose as customer service agents to collect sensitive information.

How to Protect Yourself

While AI scams are becoming more sophisticated, there are simple steps you can take to stay safe.

Slow Down and Verify

If someone requests money, personal information, or urgent action:

  • Pause.
  • Contact the person directly using a known phone number.
  • Do not rely on caller ID alone.

Create a Family “Safe Word”

Establish a secret phrase with family members. If someone calls claiming to be in trouble, ask for the safe word.

Be Skeptical of Urgency

Scammers create panic to override your judgment. Legitimate financial institutions will not pressure you to make an immediate payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.

Protect Your Personal Information

Never share:

  • Online banking credentials
  • One-time passcodes
  • Social Security numbers
  • Debit or credit card details

Eastex Credit Union will never ask for passwords or authentication codes.

Strengthen Your Digital Security

  • Use strong, unique passwords.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication when available.
  • Regularly monitor your accounts for unusual activity.

Limit Public Sharing

Be mindful of posting personal details, travel plans, or voice recordings on social media. Scammers use publicly available information to craft convincing attacks.

What to Do If You Suspect Fraud

If you believe you’ve been targeted or have shared sensitive information:

  1. Contact Eastex Credit Union immediately.
  2. Monitor your accounts for suspicious activity.
  3. Change your passwords.
  4. Report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission at IdentityTheft.gov.

The sooner fraud is reported, the faster protective steps can be taken.
