Common Travel Scams to Avoid This Summer

Planning your summer trip is fun for the whole family. Figuring out what sites to see, what restaurants you want to eat at and making sure your wardrobe is picked out. Everyone is waiting to make fun memories and relax. Before you go it’s good to be prepared for any scams that are out there. Tourists are easily targeted everywhere, no matter how vigilant you are. Here’s some things to look out for.

Public Wi-Fi

We all look for wi-fi when traveling, and it can seem like a relief when we find free wi-fi. However, this wi-fi is perfect for scammers to hack in and steal your personal data. They work unnoticed and get your information quickly without detection. A way to avoid this is confirming the name of the wi-fi network with a staff member to make sure it’s real if you need to use wi-fi. Also, have two-factor authentication for all your logins. The best way to avoid this completely is to use cellular data and not any public wi-fi.

Pick Pocketers

Wherever you’re traveling, you will run into locals. While most are friendly, some don’t have the best intentions. While they may “accidentally” spill something on you, they will try to grab your wallet or phone when they help clean up the stain. It’s good to keep personal space and clean up the stain yourself. Also, never keep valuables in your pockets. Have a bag that zips and is close to your chest to protect your wallet, phone, keys, and any other valuable items.

ATM Scams

This is a common swindle. The ATM will have card skimmers and cameras so they can get your card number and PIN. Always check the ATM before you use it. Card skimmers are usually glued on so it will be easy to see if there’s something attached. Another way to check is when you insert your card, it should be smooth. If you’re having difficulty inserting your debit card, most likely there is a card skimmer.

Hotel Scams

If you’re on a third-party site, be aware of listings that look too good to be true. You might make a reservation, but when you show up, there’s no record of your booking. In some cases, scammers will have your credit card information and already have the money you paid for that reservation. Make sure to check reviews and images that are provided to see if it’s a legitimate place. Also, check the URL. A long URL that doesn’t make sense might indicate that it isn’t a real site to make a reservation.
