Credit Card Scam Techniques
How Do They Get Your Credit Card Number?
In order for credit card scams to take place, the first thing the scammers need is your credit card number. They accomplish this in several ways that can be very basic or technologically advanced.1. Phishing
With this strategy, the thief is a smooth talker who will pose as someone you trust, often as your credit card issuer, and they will convince you to give them your credit card information. Examples include:- Hotel Front Desk Scam: A hotel guest will receive a phone call in their room from someone claiming to be calling from the hotel front desk. They usually say that your credit card could not be processed and will ask you to confirm details.
- Chip Credit Card Scam: The scammers contact you via email, posing as your credit card company. They then inform you that you need to confirm your credit card number and other personal information in order to get the new chip-enabled credit card.
- Credit Card Fraud Scam: The scammer will contact the victim, sounding very official and may even have all their details such as name and address. They then inform the victim that they will remove the fraudulent charges, but in order to do so they need to confirm that you have the card they are looking for and will ask for the CVV number on your card.
